Wine description:

The 2014 Starr Road Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel shows an intense and appealing dark ruby garnet color in the bowl of the glass. Aromas of blackberry, cherry, vanilla and cassis are followed by a mineral and brown spice note. Full to medium bodied on the palate, balanced notes of ripe black cherry, blueberry, plum with bramble fruit, are presented on the palate, and coats the mouth with plush round tannins. This glorious wine offers immediate approachability, with its luscious soft edges, depth and complexity. The well-incorporated tannins are complimented by subtle oak and cocoa components that carry on to the finish that keeps pumping out the flavor. This delicious wine was aged in 50% new American oak cooperage to round out the vibrant fruit flavors and long enjoyable finish. Enjoy!

Vineyard Information:
The Starr Road Ranch Vineyard Located in the foothills of the Russian River Valley AVA with a beautiful view of the valley floor, the Starr Road Ranch Vineyard is organically grown and dry farmed, and has been ever since its original planting in 1920. It is cultivated without the use of herbicides or pesticides, and has relied on winter rains as its sole source of irrigation for over 95 years. This historic old vine vineyard produces very low yields of outstanding fruit; approximately one ton per acre.

2014 Season Summary:
All of us at Gamba were grateful for another wonderful vintage, despite an ongoing drought and earthquake that rocked us in 2014. A mild winter and spring led us to an early bud break, although the overall length of the growing season was similar to past years. The moderate crop size allowed for even ripening, with rapid sugar accumulation earlier than usual. Tannins were in check and berries were small, which translates into great balance and concentration in the wines. The year brought an early harvest for us, winding down by mid-October. The beautifully ripened fruit created some high-density fermentations, and resulted in very nice wines we are pleased to share with you.

Winemaking:
Careful hand harvesting ensures only the finest clusters reach the winery. Whole berries undergo an extended cold soak prior to fermentation to extract deep color and fruit character. Indigenous yeasts carry out the carefully monitored fermentations. Free-run juice is barreled down post fermentation, followed by a remaining gently pressed portion, and transferred into separate lots of small oak barrels for the aging regimen. The wine was aged in a generous share of new American oak cooperage typically from fourteen to eighteen months before bottling. During the entire winemaking process, the grapes, juice, and wine are carefully monitored, and handled with minimal intervention. The finished wine is our attempt at bringing to your table a true unadulterated expression of the vintage, site, and unique flavor character of each of our treasured historic vineyards.
